Collyer now Collier

Here is the Collier Coat of Arms generated by Tiffany as requested by DCC (see post “More Roots and In Search of a Patriot)”  Also in that post is a letter questioning some of the findings in the genealogist report.  The full report is in the earlier post “French?  You must be kidding!”

Since posting the full report, I have discovered a more abbreviated report.  The author’s handwriting appears the same to me.  I suspect it may have been the differences between the two reports that lead DC Collier to question the genealogist in the following letter (also from an earlier post).

Here are some more documents relating to the genealogy research and the attempt to document the service of Vines Collier in the French and Indian War and his contributions to the American Revolution.

I believe the  following letter is in response to the genealogy report posted under the “French?  You must be kidding” topic.  If so, then the letter is directed to the paid researcher of that report.

The research turned up two Collier Coats of Arms.   One would eventually be selected to represent the family.  It is used as the Collier Heritage Foundation logo found in this website.  More about the Collier Coat of Arms in a later post.

Re-Dedication of Vines Collier Monument, 2001

03_vines_03 02_vines_02

In 2001, several descendants of Vines Collier, spearheaded by the late William Ramon Collier, ordered monuments to place over the unmarked graves of Sarah Elizabeth Williamson Collier (wife of Vines) and Vines Collier, Jr.  Placement of the monuments was accompanied by the DAR’s re-dedication of the Vines Collier marker on October 20, 2001.  Approximately 35-40 family and friends attended the event.

The Search for the Grave of Vines Collier

Jena Cuthbert Collier, the only son of Isaac Cuthbert Collier, became more interested in his family history after the death of his father.  He knew his ancestors had moved to Upson County from Oglethorpe County, Georgia and that they had lived near Old Salem Church.  In 1924, J. C. sent the following letter to “the nearest resident of Old Salem Church”.

Apparently the letter found its way to Mr. John S. Bacon, who took the inquiry seriously.  Mr. Bacon did his research and responded.

A probably excited J. C. Collier wrote back in less than a week.  I have not found any pages of the letter that might have come after the first page.

Here is a June 8, 1925 letter from John S. Bacon to J. C. Collier (original and JCC copy).  It is interesting to note the original envelope was postmarked Lexington and is self-addressed to J. C. Collier.  I found J. C. often provided self-addressed stamped envelopes with his inquiries.
